The program will include a slide presentation by Frank
Martin and Chris Faust who have documented suburban growth within the
metropolitan area since 1990. I had an opportunity about four years ago to
• hear both these gentlemen speak on metropolitan growth and make their
slide presentation at that time. At that point, they were both in early stages
of compiling photographs of metropolitan growth and how this is having
environmental as well as physical change on the landscape.
Since I originally heard Mr. Martin's and Mr. Faust's presentation, their
project to document growth has gained a lot of attention. These two
gentlemen do an excellent job in visually presenting growth and development
and how it slowly whittles away the rural and agricultural landscape.
If your schedules' allow, I would encourage attendance to this session to hear
Mr. Martin and Mr. Faust speak about metropolitan growth and suburban
development. As I have mentioned before, the impacts of this growth should
not be a mystery for communities, because all we have to do is look towards
the metropolitan area to see the impacts. The greatest hurdle that we are all
stuck with is that these changes happen incrementally over a long period of
time and, more or less, happen without fully recognizing the implications
until they are happening.
If you have any questions or comments, please feel free to contact me at 441-
4902. If I do not have to attend the Council meeting on the 22nd of April, I
plan to attend the presentation myself.
•
s:\planning\ c\growth.doc
13065 Orono Parkway • P.O.
