Marketing programs are designed with a comprehensive approach to understand the <br /> • internal and external environments in order to identify,develop,and exploit competitive advantages. Fundamental <br /> principles of marketing are combined with a thorough analysis of the marketplace to create effective programs for <br /> execution by local business managers. <br /> Our Animal Nutrition Research Group is responsible for maintaining Cargill's leadership in delivering animal nutrition <br /> technology through feed products and programs. This responsibility includes the development of new technology <br /> through (1) animal research at Cargill's own research facility, (2)joint research efforts involving Cargill's Central <br /> Research Department, (3) research conducted in cooperation with universities, and (4) adaptation of technology <br /> developed by independent research organizations. <br /> Our research is focused on identifying competitive technologies which will effectively deliver key benefits in a <br /> manner which will be profitable to Cargill as well as our customers. Our research efforts have brought significant <br /> new technologies to livestock producers throughout the world. These innovations include patented feed <br /> formulations such as: <br /> • Liquid supplements for cattle with controlled release of nonprotein nitrogen. <br /> • Intake regulation systems for livestock fed ad libitum. <br /> •A new approach to formulating rations for dairy cattle considering dietary amino acid needs. <br /> • A method for using liquid ingredients to make a solid-feed supplement for cattle. <br /> Other examples of product concepts which have contributed to Cargill's leadership in animal nutrition technology: <br /> • Using computer-based models to forecast animal performance. <br /> • Acgres.iv,, ?,.,lic^^er ,.. t',.7',"-thLtriC amine acid. tit r'. ritional needs of young livestock. <br /> Phased-feeding and situation-dependent nutrition recommendations which tailor feeding programs to local economics. <br /> • Forage treatments which Improve nutrient presa,vaticn, "-creasing the value of home-grown feedstuffs. <br /> Our Research Grout, continually looks for improvement in the methods for specifying the formulation of animal <br /> feeds, including identification and evaluation of new ingredients and nutrient specification systems, This is an <br /> • essential role in Cargill's commitment to be a leader in the sourcing of nutrients at the best possible cost. <br /> Cargill's staff of Technology Information Managers is responsible for accomplishing the transfer of knowledge and <br /> technology throughout Cargill's worldwide feed business. The most current computer technologies are used to <br /> gain timely access to knowledge from around the world. The Cargill Information Center, universities and other <br /> research institutions complement the available literature as effective knowledge resources. Cargill's Technology <br /> Information staff enhances this knowledge to make it a part of our business plan. <br /> Cargill has been a leader in the development of computer software to transfer formulation and decision-making <br /> technology into the field, close to the customer. Systems such as the Cargill Feedlot System, Cargill Dairy <br /> System, Cargill Swine System, Profile (dairy herd record analysis), and the Cargill Sow Record Program bring <br /> valuable services to livestock producers. In addition. the recently introduced Information Products Database <br /> suppers Cargi;i personnel by helping them quickly locate knowledge resources. <br /> Cargill's Information Managers provide support for questions from operating units on the appropriate application <br /> of technology at the local level. Requests concerning ingredient utilization and quality control, product design. and <br /> livestock management are handled in a prompt and professional manner. Visits to operating units are conducted <br /> proactively to learn more about the local business and "on request" to address specific situations. <br /> Management/Training <br /> Cargill's Worldwide Feed business is led by David Larson (President of Cargill's Feed Division since 1983 and past <br /> Chariman of the American Feed Industry Association) and his team of 8 senior managers, all of whom have vast <br /> experience in both the U.S. and the international feed marketplace. Managerial guidance is provided through <br /> review of operating reports, regular personal contact to discuss current issues in the marketplace and regular trips <br /> to provide in-depth review and suggestions for improvement. <br /> r <br />
