Personal use of e-mail should be limited to brief, concise messages (as with personal <br />phone calls). Personal e-mail may be sent and read only during non-working hours. <br /> <br />INTERNET USE <br /> <br />Purpose of the Internet <br /> <br />The Internet is a business tool to be used primarily for business related purposes, i.e., to <br />communicate with customers and suppliers, to research relevant topics and obtain useful business <br />information. <br /> <br />1. Employees may use their Internet facilities for non-business research or browsing during <br />non-work hours (before or after business hours), provided that all other usage policies are <br />adhered to. <br /> <br />A. <br /> <br />Employees are advised to exercise discretion when using the Internet for personal <br />business since any use can be monitored by individuals outside the organization, <br />and an internal log indicating which sites have been accessed will be kept and <br />monitored by City staff. <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />B. Personal use of the internet is limited to web sites that are considered "business <br />appropriate" and employees are expected to exercise good judgment when <br />accessing sites. Employees may not intentionally access any site that is <br />inappropriate for a public sector employee, or which could cause embarrassment <br />to the City or to the employee. If this occurs, employees are expected to notify <br />their supervisor. <br /> <br />2. Prohibited uses of the Internet include, but are not limited to, Internet sites reflecting <br /> <br />· adult entertainment and sexually explicit material; <br />· web sites promoting violence or terrorism; <br />· illegal use of controlled substances (drugs); <br />· intolerance of other people/races/religions, etc. <br /> <br />Any employee accessing an inappropriate site as determined by the City may be subject <br />to discipline up to and including termination. <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />26 <br />
