COUNTY PROFILE Ramsey County, home of the state capitol of Saint Paul, is located on the east side of the seven-county St. Paul-Minneapolis, Twin Cities Metropolitan Area. The Mississippi River flows through the southern region of the County, which is home to numerous lakes, parks and trails that are used daily by an active, involved citizenry. People are friendly and tend to take a keen interest in their neighborhoods, schools, regional activities and government. Alexander Ramsey Ramsey County is divided into seven districts Originally to be named "St. Paul County," the name was changed so it would honor Alexander Ramsey, the newly appointed first governor of the Minnesota Territory. Who decided upon this name change remains a mystery - there is no documentation of the decision. From those early beginnings in the mid-1800s, Ramsey County has fostered the growth of progressive communities with rich histories based in agriculture, forestry and industry. While the transportation of goods has always been key, tourism continues to draw people to the area, just as it did in the earliest days of settlement, when Fort Snelling was the only frontier outpost in what would become Minnesota. The next closest fort was 200 miles south on the Mississippi River. Today, the Fort is a popular tourist attraction, transporting people back in time to 1827, with costumed soldiers, frontier weddings and a chance to try one's skills at the Blacksmith's Shop.. ~ SPRINGSTED Page 3
