Elk River Public Library Board Page 2
August 1,2017
5. General Business
5.1 New Business
5.1.a Change September Meeting Date
Due to vacations, the Tuesday, September 26, 2017 meeting date is
changed to Wednesday, October 4, 2017 at 5:30 pm at the Elk River
Public Library.
5.1.b Councilman Ovall read an email he received from Mayor Dietz recapping
the discussion between Great River Regional Library and the City of Elk
River on the proposal of increasing the hours at the Elk River Public
Library as follows:
• Total hours increase is 3 per week which would result in the library
opening at 10:00 am Monday—Saturday.
• The City currently budgets $11,000 for programs at the library;
$5,600 for Storytime programs and$5,400 for other programs.
• GRRL estimated the increase of 3 hours a week will cost$10,700 per
year.
• The City proposes increasing its budget from$11,000 to $13,200 to
fund the cost of increasing the hours, leaving $2,500 per year for
Storytime programs.
• GRRL commits to using legacy funding for as many programs as
possible that will no longer be funded by the City. GRRL staff will
take over staffing for the Baby Bounce and Preschool Storytime
programs; GRRL will keep Robin on staff for Toddler Time
Storytime as she draws in a large crowd. Storytimes will be reduced
from 48 per year to 36 per year.
• The City has seen an increase in liquor store revenues and might use
this increase to fund the overall library budget increase of$2,200.
• GRRL is asking for a 5-year commitment from the City and if
approved by City Council, the change will become effective January
1, 2017.
• GRRL is in support of the proposal;Brandi, Robbie and Karen
Pundsack, Executive Director,will attend the City's August 14, 2017
library budget meeting to be held during a City Council workshop.
Library Board members acknowledge and appreciate the work done by
both GRRL and the City of Elk River towards this effort and think
having a consistent Library start time of 10:00 am will enhance the
library's availability to library patrons.
Additionally,Library Board members may reach out to the Friends of the
Library to discuss ways to meet the program funding gap as Board
INAIUPEI
