LEARN TO SKATE USA ► AGE 3 -ADULT <br />Learn to Skate Basic Skills program is now called Learn to Skate USA <br />and has been restructured to better fit the needs of all skaters. The <br />new program design will teach children and adults the fundamentals <br />of ice skating, build confidence, ensure success through a progressive <br />curriculum, and give each participant the foundation necessary to reach <br />their recreational or competitive goals. Learn to Skate USA is backed <br />by US Figure Skating, USA Hockey, and US Speedskating. Register <br />using MasterCard/Visa/Discover/American Express through the ISD <br />728 Community Education website at www.728communityed.com or by <br />phone at 763.241.3520. Registration deadline for all classes is three <br />days prior to start of the class. Fees will not be pro -rated for missed <br />classes and no refunds once sessions start, except for extenuating <br />circumstances. Classes may be cancelled or combined if minimum <br />registration is not met. Note: Classes fill quickly, so register early as you <br />are not guaranteed a spot if wait -listed. <br />Classes are taught by sanctioned instructors over the course of six <br />weeks and are held at the Rogers Activity Center. Rental skates are <br />available for $2 per pair per week, and bike helmets are available for <br />$1 per week. Helmets are required for all Snowplow Sam and Basic <br />1 classes. All skaters should wear warm pants, jacket, and gloves. <br />Hockey classes require helmets, hockey gloves, shin pads, and a stick <br />(other equipment is optional). No double -blade skates allowed, nor <br />are parents allowed on ice during lesson times. Exceptions must be <br />approved by skate director. <br />It is common for children to repeat a level before advancing to the next <br />level, especially with the new skill sets being introduced. All skaters <br />will be assessed the first day of class to ensure they are in the correct <br />classification; if not, they may be moved appropriately. Attendance is <br />important to learn new skills that build on previous classes. Please <br />arrive 20 minutes early the first day of class to pick up name badge <br />and general information. Note: <br />Please check skates to ensure sharp edges as this will make it easier to <br />skate; skate sharpening is available at the arena for $4. <br />I <br />ME <br />SNOWPLOW SAM - DISCOVER, LEARN & PLAY <br />► AGE 3-5 <br />Designed for new skaters who have rarely or never been on skates, this <br />level will help pre-school skaters develop the preliminary coordination <br />and strength necessary to move on ice. Gloves, jacket, warm pants and <br />a bike or hockey helmet are required. No parents allowed on ice without <br />permission. <br />Snowplow Sam 1: Designed for skaters with no experience; <br />introduces how to stand, sit, fall and get up on and off the ice, <br />marching and dipping. <br />Snowplow Sam 2: Beginning process of marching, dipping while <br />moving. Includes wiggles, swizzles, weight shifting and glide. <br />Snowplow Sam 3: Designed for skaters who can move along the <br />ice in strides with long glides, multiple forward and back swizzles <br />in a row, snowplow stop and curves. <br />» Snowplow Sam 4: This new level focuses on pushing and <br />balance while moving forward and backward, two -foot glides, <br />rocking horse and two -foot turns from forward to backward in place <br />(both directions). <br />BASIC SKILLS - FUNDAMENTALS ► AGE 6+ <br />Basic Skills has six progressive levels that teach the fundamentals of <br />ice skating, providing the best foundation for figure skating, hockey, <br />and speed skating. Basic 1 and 2 are introductory levels and Basic 3-6 <br />develop the fundamental skating skills, focusing on basic athleticism, <br />agility, balance, coordination and speed. <br />» Basic 1: First of two introductory levels for new skaters with no <br />prior skating experience to build confidence while learning to <br />skate. Sit and stand on ice, marching, gliding, dipping, wiggles and <br />swizzles, and beginning snowplow stop. <br />» Basic 2: Introduces scooter pushes, one- and two -foot glides, <br />rocking horse, backward swizzles, two -foot turns from forward to <br />backward in place (both directions) and moving snowplow stops. <br />>> Basic 3: Skaters learn basic fundamental moves through a series <br />of progression --stroking, half swizzle pumps, moving two -foot <br />turns, backward one -foot glides, backward snowplow stops, <br />forward slalom and pivots. Participants should wear figure skates. <br />» Basic 4: Beginning advanced level skills; figure skates necessary <br />and toe pick is used. Skills include inside and outside edges, <br />crossovers, backward half swizzle pumps, backward one -foot <br />glides, beginning two -foot spin and forward lunges. <br />We currently offer Basic 4+, Basic 5 and Basic 6.
