Table ES.2 - Summary of Municipal WWTF Receiving Leachate from WM Landfills
Conveyance Options
The Leachate Study addresses two alternate forcemain routes from the Waste Management
facility to the Elk River Collection System. Option 1 is approximately 4.0 miles and follows
Highway 169 while Option 2 is approximately 5.0 miles and follows a route along the Great
Northern Trail Corridor. Estimate of probable construction costs range from $1.9 to $2.2 million
for a 4 -in unlined forcemain.
Recommendations
Recommendations following the preliminary evaluation are consistent with the project plan
outlined in the Memorandum of Understanding. The projected impacts on allocated treatment
capacity and the uncertainty regarding the reduction of color and improved UVT through the
biological treatment process should be tested with a pilot scale operation or via truck delivery and
metered feed to the facility when the full scale activated sludge process is on-line.
The pilot operations are scheduled for November 2015 following completion and start-up of the
activated sludge treatment facilities at the Elk River Wastewater Treatment Facility.
City of Elk River, Minnesota —121.109643 Page 4
Elk River/Waste Management Leachate Study Prepared by Bolton & Menk, Inc.
Elk River,
Fergus Falls,
Watertown,
Fort Atkinson,
Port Washington,
Parameter
MN
MN
W1
W1
W1
Design Flow
4.54
5.20
2.70
3.10
(MGD)
Current Average
1.30
1.80
2.5-3.0
1.7-2.0
1.22
Flow (MGD)
Typical Leachate
100,000-200,000
Summer:
Flow (gpd)
35,000
12,000
gallon/month
5,700 gpd
gallons/day
gallons/day
3,500-6,500
Winter:
6,000-12000 gpd
gallon/day
much lower
Percent Leachate
2.7
0.67
0.14-0.21
0.34
0.50-1.00
Treatment
Activated
Activated Sludge
Activated Sludge
Activated Sludge
Activated Sludge
Sludge
Bio -P
Chem -P
Bio -P
Chem -P
Disinfection
Uy
Chlorine
Uy
Chlorine
Uy
Leachate
Color observed.
Indicates that color
No significant color
Color has not been noted.
No significant color.
