collected and stored prior to testing. Samples were collected when the leachate
feed rate was 25 gpm and the UV transmittance was recorded at its low valve of
44%. Samples were stored in 5 -gallon containers.
A 1000 mg/L of stock solution was prepared using commercially available
liquid bleach as a chlorine source. All the glassware was cleaned prior to use.
The initial UV transmittance was recorded using the spectrophotometer. A
known volume of stock chlorine solution for each desired chlorine dose was
pipetted into a 1 -liter (L) sample of the wastewater. The solution was mixed for
30 seconds before being filtered through a glass fiber filter. The UV
transmittance was evaluated on the filtered effluent sample. Results of the
chlorination testing are discussed in section 3.
B. Pilot Study Procedure and Schedule
The pilot study was started by slowly introducing the leachate to the WWTF. In the
beginning, the leachate was fed at 6.7 gpm for two days to acclimate the existing
microorganisms in the aeration basins. After no adverse effects were observed the
leachate feed rate was doubled. The leachate feed rate was incrementally increased to
25 gpm over the period of first month of running the pilot study.
Over the period of next twenty -plus days of pilot study, the leachate feed rate was
decreased to 15 gpm and increased back to 25 gpm. The leachate feed rate had to be
decreased due to unavailability of the leachate. The pumps were continuously
monitored and adjusted during the duration of the pilot study.
A temporary chemical seed system, for chlorination and dechlorination, was provided
as a standby disinfection system. This system was needed to meet effluent
disinfection requirements in the event of UV disinfection system was not working
properly due to leachate color in the wastewater.
The primary pump began feeding leachate into the WWTF on September 26, 2016
and the study continued till November 18, 2016.
Prepared by: Bolton & Menk, Inc.
