The UV transmittance was tested using a DR 5000 spectrophotometer shown in
Figure 2.4. The UV transmittance was tested at 254 nanometers using a 10 -
millimeter cuvette. Distilled water was used for a blank and to zero the
spectrophotometer.
Figure 2A DR 5000 Spectrophotometer
3. Chlorination Testing Procedure and Equipment
Chlorine is a strong disinfectant and a strong oxidizing agent. Chlorine has the
ability to oxidize compounds within the wastewater, making it a desirable
chemical to evaluate the effectiveness that it has to remove the color from the
wastewater effluent and increase the UV transmittance. Even though, the City
of Elk River does not use chlorine as a primary disinfectant, bench scale testing
was performed to evaluate the effectiveness of chlorine to remove color in the
wastewater.
The testing was designed to determine chlorine dosage that improves UV
transmittance in the treated wastewater. The filter effluent samples were
Prepared by: Bolton & Menk, Inc. Experimental Set -Up
Waste Management/Elk River Leachate Pilot Study I T21.109643 Page 6
