TechTrends e-Newsletter j April 2004 Page 5 of 5
How can you make sure your company's Web site appears in search engine results?
Consider these four tips as a starting point:
1. Choose the right keywords —i.e., the ones that accurately describe your
business—and emphasize them on your site in ways that search engines will notice.
Search engines work in part by examining page names and onscreen text. Words
that appear frequently or near the top of the page receive special attention, as do
terms set apart as section headings, or in boldface.
2. Find the right title tag. A Web page's title tag—the little tag at the top line of a
Web browser —for your page is a crucial element, as most engines place a high
level of importance on keywords that are found in it.
3. Go easy on the sizzle. While dynamic content and multimedia files will add
flash and pop to your site, they also can make it harder for search engines to find it.
In fact, many search engines can't index multimedia and dynamic pages.
4. Keep it fresh. Search engines favor Web sites with up-to-date information.
Regular, substantial site revisions can keep your pages at or near the top of search
result lists.
These are by no means the only tactics you'll need to make sure your site gets
seen.
