Sherry Vavra, Executive Director – Mahaska Community Recreation Foundation

“Throughout the process of planning and construction, Spohn Ranch staff proved themselves to be accessible,
professional and knowledgeable. Most importantly, they were willing to accommodate our needs and engage
in the process based on our timeline and structure. This project began in 2007 when two seventh graders
applied for a small grant because they wanted to develop a place to skate in their neighborhood of Little
Village, on the southwest side of Chicago. They organized other young skaters and created a strong youth
group that has done the planning, designing, fundraising, and partnership development to make a skate spot in
this community a reality. Spohn Ranch staff were willing to engage with stakeholders, provide time for
community input as decisions were made and make continuous adjustments to design based on this input.

They were able to adjust to the dynamic of our group, thus respecting and promoting the ownership that
local skaters have for this project, while satisfying the needs of the Chicago Park District, which manages the
land where the Plaza is located. Construction was timely and skillfully done, and staff were very
communicative during each step of the process.

We now have a beautiful Plaza that is a source of pride for the local skate community and has become a
destination for skaters around the Chicagoland area. We would certainly work with Spohn Ranch again as we
move forward with this and other projects.”

- Simone Alexander, Project Manager – Enlace Chicago

“When the City of Berea began to seriously talk about building a skatepark, I started to contact several of the
skatepark builders in the industry to find out what was available on the market. We also called and spoke to
several other parks and recreation departments all over the state to find out what worked and what didn’t
work with their particular skateparks. It was through this research that Spohn Ranch’s impeccable reputation
for their quality work came to light.
From the preliminary planning stages to construction, Spohn Ranch always maintained the utmost customer
service approach. After every public meeting I would touch base with them to discuss ideas and input that we
had received from our user group. You worked very hard to accommodate our budget, space and user needs,
and we ended up with a design that made everyone happy!
Because of Spohn Ranch our skatepark will not only last us lifetime, but create friendships and memories for all
of our skatepark enthusiasts. Thank you to all of the staff who worked so hard to make our dreams a reality!”
- Maggy Kriebel, Parks and Recreation Director

LITTLE VILLAGE SKATE PLAZA – Chicago, Illinois
BEREA SKATEPARK – Berea, Kentucky
