RECREATION & WELLNESS CENTER EXPANSION
UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA, MINNEAPOLIS
Studio Five Architects, in collaboration with Cannon Design, designed the Recreation and Wellness Expansion to the exist-
ing Recreation Center at the University of Minnesota. The 160,000 sf, 4 story addition is south of the existing recreation
and aquatic centers and north of Scholars Walk. Spaces include fitness areas, locker rooms, a climbing wall, multi-purpose
rooms, a Super Mac gymnasium, administrative space and the Outdoor Recreation Center.
The expansion wraps the south and east facade of the existing recreation center, and is lifted at the entry level to create a
plaza and entrances to both the Aquatic Center and the new Recreation and Wellness Center.
The interior spaces are filled with natural light that penetrates the four-story atrium. The running track is suspended inside
the atrium, with tiers of fitness space below. The multi-purpose rooms are ideal for group fitness, yoga, and as meeting
rooms. The 30 foot tall climbing wall also has a bouldering area.
The building was opened to the students in fall 2013.
22 JLG ARCHITECTS I STUDIO FIVE ARCHITECTS 23 CITY OF ELK RIVER
