An upper level fitness track overlooks the gym
spaces and has views to the outside as well as access to the fit-
ness and weights area on the second level. The gym can host
multiple concurrent court games and features change rooms
for tournament use, the ability to subdivide playing places, and
floor inserts for volleyball. Racquetball and handball are pro-
vided nearby.
FIELDHOUSE One unique feature of the Rec Center is a 13,000
square foot indoor turf fieldhouse space. It has the ability to host
football for youth play and upper level training and practice.
TENNIS Within the same volume of space as the fieldhouse is
the tennis center, featuring high performance flooring surface,
four full sized competition courts, and large amounts of natural
light. Dividers between courts and rolling bleachers allow for
multiple configurations and competitions.
FITNESS Free weights, circuit training, and group fitness are
housed on the upper level mezzanine with views down into
lower spaces and several access points to the track that rings
the gymnasium.
AQUATICS The giant aquatics center contains a water park
complete with water slides, a lazy river, zero -entry splash pool,
a fully -accessible instructional pool, and a competition swim-
ming and diving pool with spectator seating. The most unique
feature in the water park, a surfing -ready wave pool, brings a
service offering not found anywhere else in North Dakota.
COMMUNITY Williston Parks and Recreation Department
offices are located in the building, and staff and visitors can ac-
cess this area without having to go through the main rec center
spaces. Building users can use the secure and safe on-site child
care. Budding chefs have a demonstration kitchen for classes,
and which can also act as a dispensary for meeting room and
senior center activities. Near the teen area is what is sure to be
a very popular attraction: room -sized simulators for hunting and
other outdoor pursuits.
CONSERVATION Taking into account the locations of parking and
the main building entry, plus the desire to get natural light in as
many spaces as possible led to the use of carefully placed win-
dows, canopies, and sun shading devices.
JLG ARCHITECTS I STUDIO FIVE ARCHITECTS 19 CITY OF ELK RIVER
