Uity of

MEMORANDUM

TO:

Pat Klaers, City Administrator

FROM:

Employee Appreciation Event Evaluation
Committee ~
Michele McPhersorf~)irector of Planning
Sandy Peine, City Clerk
David Potvin, Liquor Store Manager
Debbie Huebner, Planning Secretary
Bob Kluntz, Police Investigator

DATE: June 28, 2000

SUBJECT:

Recommendations for Changes to the
Employee Appreciation Event

Background

The Employee Appreciation Event Evaluation Committee has been meeting monthly
since March to prepare a series of recommendations for your consideration for changes
to the Employee Appreciation Event. Our goal was to present options for inclusion in
the budget discussion with the City Council. We completed a number of tasks,
including surveying other communities, surveying employees for their opinion, and
reviewing costs for dinner, lunch and "other" options such as a boat cruise. This event
could be combined "holiday" event depending on the time of year that it is scheduled.

Other Cities' Programs
The Committee surveyed communities of similar or slightly larger population to
determine if there was any clear trend for employee appreciation events. Unfortunately,
no clear trend emerged. Some cities pay for their program, others do not, some hold
lunches, other dinners, and budgets ranged from $100.00 to $6,000.00. Attached, as
Exhibit A is the table summarizing the results of the survey.

Employee Opinions
The Committee next surveyed the employees to determine their opinions regarding the
current program. The results are attached as Exhibit B. The employees were surveyed
regarding a lunch versus dinner event, the evening of choice, whether they would like to
bring a guest, and whether they would be willing to pay a small fee for their guest.
They were also asked to comment on the quality of the gifts they receive. One hundred
and thirteen employees were surveyed (all regular full and part-time employees and the
Police Reserves) and fifty responses were returned.

13065 Orono Parkway · P.O.
