• <br /> St.Andrew's Roman Catholic Church was organized about <br /> 1890.The first church building was a simple frame structure.A <br /> new building was begun in 1921 and the congregation <br /> occupied the basement for a number of years until a new <br /> structure was completed. <br /> Cemeteries <br /> There are four historic cemeteries in Elk River.Orono <br /> Cemetery was established in 1855 on a small peninsula on the <br /> south side of Lake Orono.Vernon Cemetery was established <br /> ca.1855 in section 34,two blocks west of Evans Street on <br /> Railroad Drive.St.Andrew's Catholic Cemetery dates from ca. <br /> 1899.It is located at 193rd Avenue and Highway 169 in Section <br /> 27.Meadowvale Cemetery is located on County Road 32 in <br /> Section 6,partially in Livonia Township. <br /> Sherburne County Courthouse <br /> When Sherburne County was created from Benton County in <br /> 1856,the first seat was at Humboldt,later known as Big Lake. <br /> There was no permanent courthouse and business was <br /> transacted in private homes and schoolhouses.In 1867,Orono <br /> became the county seat,and the schoolhouse was used for <br /> county purposes.In 1877 a new courthouse was completed on <br /> Oak Street between Main and Depot streets. The two-story, <br /> hipped-roof frame building was designed by W.C.Warner and <br /> Ask built by Horatio Houlton,an Elk River contractor. The design <br /> I. included a bracketed square tower with a pyramidal roof rising <br /> over the entry.A new courthouse was erected in 1970.The <br /> historic building was razed in 1995.Fraternal organizations <br /> and societies met in a variety of buildings. <br /> Masonic,Fraternal,and Other Organizations <br /> Preservation Planning <br /> Many local organizations were created in the late nineteenth Summary:Schools, <br /> century and met in private homes as well as in meeting rooms Churches,Cemeteries and <br /> in downtown business blocks.Two early organizations are of Local Institutions <br /> note.The Grand Lodge was organized in 1872.
