• Richfield's Process
• The City of Richfield is currently working on its seventh Habitat for Humanity house
since 1993.
• Substandard homes are acquired by voluntary sellers. Once the lot is cleared and the
site is prepared, the City donates the property as a second mortgage to Habitat for
Humanity.
• A community meeting is held in each neighborhood that a Habitat home is
constructed.
• There have been neighborhoods in high support of these projects and others
opposed. Educating people on the program usually helps smooth over the
opposition.
• Staff initiated the first project, however Hennepin County also has a market rate new
construction program and an affordable housing program.
City of Colombia Heights
Colombia Heights has participated in six or seven single-family projects. Planner Tim
Johnson expressed a high level of satisfaction with the Habitat for Humanity program.
Funding—Most Recent Project
• The City purchased a distressed property, which was originally zoned single-family
but was subdivided to create a twin home.
• • $20,000 city dollars
• $70,000 in HOME funds were used
• Habitat paid the difference
Funding—Past Project
• Tax forfeiture acquisition that the City bought and sold to Habitat
• CDBG funds were probably used to assist with this project but Mr.Johnson was
uncertain
Funding—Additional Projects
• Properties were purchased by Habitat directly and did not require a city subsidy or
other grant dollars.
City of Buffalo
Funding—First and only project thus far in Wright County
• HRA donated the SAC &WAC fees
• Building permit was donated by the City's building inspector, who is contracted out
Central MN Housing Partnership
General Comments
• The Central MN Housing Partnership does not work a lot with Habitat as Habitat's
programs are very specific and they also do not utilize any government funding
• (except land development assistance) for their projects which most of the Housing
Partnership's programs utilize.
