• St.Andrew's Roman Catholic Church was organized about

<br /> Sherburne County Courthouse
<br /> When Sherburne County was created from Benton County in
<br /> 1856,the first seat was at Humboldt,later known as Big Lake.
<br /> There was no permanent courthouse,with business transacted
<br /> in private homes and schoolhouses.In 1867,Orono became the
<br /> county seat,where a schoolhouse was used for county
<br /> purposes.In 1877 a new courthouse was completed on Oak
<br /> Street between Main and Depot streets. The two-story hipped-
<br /> roof frame building was designed by W.C.Warner and built by
<br /> Horatio Houlton,an Elk River contractor. The design included
<br /> a bracketed square tower with a pyramidal roof rising over the
<br /> entry.A new courthouse was erected in 1970.The historic
<br /> building was razed• 1995.Fratemal organizations and
<br /> societies met• a variety of buildings.

<br /> The temperance conviction of early settlers was reflected in the
<br /> organization of the Temperance Murphy Club,organized in
<br /> 1877.The group campaigned against saloons and liquor
<br /> consumption.The Grand Lodge was organized in 1872.
