<br /> The Yankee settlement of the 1850s and 1860s was reflected in
<br /> the organization of the first churches as well as early fraternal
<br /> organizations and societies.The first organized congregation in
<br /> •
<br /> Sherburne County was the Trinity Episcopal Church. A first
<br /> building was erected was erected in the late 1850s at 1915
<br /> Second Street. 70 It was moved to Elk River in 1877.The
<br /> present building at 1326 Fourth Street N.W.dates from 1890-1.
<br /> The United Christian Society of Elk River was organized in
<br /> about 1866,and the Union Church about 1875.The present
<br /> church at 1118 Fourth Street N.W.was erected•in 1881.The
<br /> building was designed and built by W.F.Chadbourne of Elk v
<br /> River.The memorial windows were dedicated in 1923. The
<br /> Meadowvale Church in Elk River township was a branch of rr M
<br /> this congregation;it was created in ca. 1920.

<br /> The Methodist Episcopal Church was organized in 1875.The
<br /> congregation met in the Orono schoolhouse until a church was
<br /> built north of the railroad tracks in 1889.A new church was ' �� l
<br /> erected in 1916 along the Jefferson Highway near Minnesota
<br /> Street.72 Trinity Episcopal Church,

<br /> The Emmanuel German Lutheran Church was organized in (1890 91).
<br /> 1918. The congregation purchased the former Methodist
<br /> Church.Services were initially held in German and English;
<br /> one German service per month was still held in the late 1930s.
<br /> The Norwegian Lutheran Church was organized• 1933 with
<br /> about nineteen charter members.The congregation originally
<br /> rented the Episcopal Church for services,with each
<br /> congregation meeting several times per month.Services were
<br /> • initially offered in both Norwegian and English.
