Reduce impacts of parks and facilities on waterways by implementing <br />best management practices such as: <br />► Rain gardens, water retention, and permeable paving <br />► Riparian buffers between lawns and water <br />► Reduction of chemicals on turf that will run into water <br />► Shoreline restoration and stabilization <br />► Expand wetland capacity <br />2. Maintain high - quality, city -owned natural areas. <br />Strategies: <br />• Create and implement management plans for parks such as Camp <br />Cozy, Woodland Trails, Big Tooth Ridge, Hillside, Meadowvale <br />Heights, Great Northern Trail, and Sedge Meadow. <br />• Restore savannah in Windsor Park. <br />• Continue to restore natural areas and shorelines within parks. <br />• Remove invasive species; natural resource assessment <br />3. Develop environmental greenways <br />Strategies: <br />Preserve greenways identified in the 2004 City of Elk River — Natural <br />Resource Inventory as high - quality natural areas. Incorporate trails <br />into greenways along with new development and as opportunities <br />arise. <br />Utilize the conceptual greenway plan within the Natural Resources <br />Inventory to prioritize resources. <br />4. Provide natural experiences in parks <br />Strategies: <br />• Incorporate natural areas (wetlands, prairies, woodlands) into new <br />parks, especially in the north part of the city. <br />• Consider habitat restoration in parks where feasible. <br />• Expand nature -based recreation programming. <br />• Implement and demonstrate environmental best practices in parks, <br />including: <br />► Rain gardens <br />► Permeable paving <br />► Native plantings <br />► Recycling <br />► Energy efficient buildings, lighting and fixtures <br />► LED lighting <br />► Solar lighting <br />Draft 11.25.14 <br />Chapter 5: How We Get There 56 <br />
