City Council Minutes Page 5
May 19,2014
Mayor Dietz stated he would like to take $4,000 of the city's contribution and put it
toward fireworks. He further stated he is going to find a way for the city to be in
charge of the fireworks every year in order for it to be permanent and not have to
worry each year if the event will happen.
Council questioned other possible issues such as insurance, liability, crowd size,
restroom facilities, signage, advertising, and volunteers from current Committee.
Councilmember Motin stated he would like the city attorney to review the matter.
He expressed concerns regarding the public purpose expenditure laws.
Council consensus was to manage the event this year but they would like another
organization to take it over. Council stated they would be willing to budget for the
fireworks each year.
Councilmember Wilson expressed concerns with having a large-scale event and
stated the intent of the Committee was to keep it community oriented.
Mr. Portner noted this item could come back to Council at the next meeting as a
consent item and to give staff time to pull information together on costs/labor.
9. Worksession
There was no worksession held.
10. Adjournment
There being no further business,Mayor Dietz adjourned the meeting of the Elk
River City Council at 6:42 p.m.
John J.
