Elk Elk River comprehensive Plan <br />R1Ver <br />a9 <br />I <br />Ivan Sand Community High School (Grades 9 -12). <br />The Ivan Sand Community High School ( ISCHS) is <br />an alternative high school that opened in 1998 for <br />students with different or unique needs. ISCHS <br />is a secondary program that is designed to help <br />students, who may be at -risk of not graduating, <br />earn a diploma. ISCHS provides schooling for <br />approximately 120 students in grades 9 -12 and is <br />located at 1232 School Street in Elk River. <br />The influences of the ISD 728 facilities, and the <br />importance of the public school system on community <br />development, create shared interest for the City <br />and ISD 728. A strong working relationship and <br />collaborative approaches should be part of addressing <br />future issues. Among the issues related to school <br />facilities area: <br />Maintaining a quality setting for Elk River schools; <br />Planning for facility needs with continued growth <br />in east Elk River; <br />Addressing challenges of school funding and <br />growth in other parts of the district; <br />Community and regional recreation needs; and <br />Capturing the economic benefits of visitors <br />attracted by the schools. <br />Charter School <br />Spectrum High School (Grades 6 -12). Spectrum High <br />School is a public charter school located at 17796 <br />Industrial Circle NW in the southeastern portion of Elk <br />River. The charter school in celebrating its eight year as a <br />member of Elk River during the 2013 -2014 school year. <br />Handke Center <br />The historic Handke Center located at 1170 Main <br />Street is home to the following ISD 728 programs <br />which enhance the education programs within the <br />City: Community Education, Early Childhood Family <br />Education (ECFE), Early Childhood Special Education <br />(ECSE), Early Childhood Screening and health services, <br />Adult Basic Educaiton (ABE), and General Education <br />Development (GED). <br />Built in 1930, the Handke Center is ISD 728's oldest <br />facility, and is now in its 83rd year of continuous <br />operation serving the public. It served as the District's <br />only high school from 1930 to 1961, then as a junior <br />high school, and later still as Handke Elementary <br />school and the Handke Magnet (elementary school). It <br />has housed the current array of programs since 2001. <br />A portion of the main floor of the 1930 building was <br />remodeled and restored to its original 1930 luster <br />during 2005 -2006. <br />Private Schools <br />In addition to the public schools in the ISD 728 School <br />District, Elk River has the following private schools: <br />My Own Montessori (Grades Pre -K — K). My <br />Own Montessori School is located at 1118 4th <br />Street NW and provides schooling for preschool <br />and kindergarten students in Elk River, Big <br />Lake, Otsego, and the Zimmerman area. My <br />Own Montessori School is located in Union <br />Congregational Church one block off of Highway <br />10 with Norfolk as the cross street. <br />St. Andrew's Catholic School (Grades Pre -K — 5). <br />St. Andrew's Catholic School is located at 428 <br />Irving Avenue NW and offers schooling for children <br />in pre- kindergarten through fifth grade. <br />Solid Rock Christian Academy (Grades K — 12). <br />Solid Rock Christian Academy was founded in <br />1994 and is located at 11800 196th Avenue NW, <br />west of Highway 169. <br />Monarch Montessori (Age 33 months — Grade 6). <br />Monarch Montessori School provides a unique <br />alternative to traditional schools, both public and <br />private within the Elk River area. The School is <br />located at 19277 Vernon Street (by Meadowvale <br />Elementary School) and serves the Elk River, <br />Otsego, Rogers, Zimmerman, Big Lake, and <br />Monticello communities. <br />Chapter 1 1 : Community Facilities / 117 <br />
