City of Mound /Mound Harbor District
Location Plans & Map Design
Mound, Minnesota
Visually attractive and understandable map design is
the key to successful wayfinding in high density areas.
i Visual Communications creates maps for all phases of
wayfinding. The location map (bottom left) was
designed to clearly illustrate locations of regulatory
signage for city and county review and approval.
The location map also serves as an installation
document for fabricators and future maintenance.
The directory map (top right) depicts land, wateways,
and key destination points. Streetscape details have
been simplified to emphasize key locations which are
shown with the use of international pictograms. A
guide highlights "Points of Interest" and provides
pictogram information alphabetically for quick
reference.
The "connection" from Auditor's Road, the City's new
main street which overlooks the historic Lost Lake
Channel, to Shoreline Drive, was completed in the
summer of 2010. The newly named "Mound Harbor
District' includes a new wayfinding signage plan
which addresses the flow of visitors in this multimodal
community - pedestrians, bicyclists, transit commuters,
and automobile traffic throughout the area to transit
stops, bicycle trails, restaurants, shelters, public
facilities, pertinent shopping and services, residential
and office areas. Just as important, is visualizing exit
and egress patterns. When a visitor enters and
exits the district for the first time, the sign system should
reinforce a stable, safe, and welcoming environment.
( The sign and wayfinding system consists of over 32
unique signtypes from area identification to
directional maps, and finally, standard regulatory
i signage. The sign design compliments the area
history as reflected in surrounding bridge design
and the street landscape.
10 ]" ° -3 :BIAS• Iy Se 6, 7 4A Bt._ ems, gar 81.6 • 10, ...11 12-1 13p
® s
If R7
,
© 1.
l 13.1 v 3311 Lvmd SRatl
.. Y .' atamauu ss36a
J
_ I, ,
Ae ilk
14.
c _ _ _ ARa;.«s eo.a aww
. - _ ...
