December 27, 2002 <br /> Name <br /> Address <br /> City State Zip <br /> Subject: Water Service Pipe Replacement <br /> Dear, <br /> This year the public street adjacent to your home is scheduled to be replaced with new <br /> concrete curb/gutter and asphalt surface. There were public information meetings held <br /> on this construction project and public hearing meetings are now being scheduled for the <br /> near future. As part of this project, Elk River Municipal Utilities will be either replacing <br /> or installing water main in the street as it is being replaced; see the attached drawing. <br /> As a property owner, you own your water service pipe from the water main to the <br /> water meter in your house. If your water service pipe is of non-copper material it should <br /> be replaced with type K copper tubing. In older homes the water service pipe was of lead <br /> or galvanized steel construction which have been found to present some health risks. <br /> Also those water service pipes are of the age where they could fail and leak. It is much <br /> more economical to replace your water service pipe when the street is disrupted during <br /> construction. <br /> In an effort to encourage our customers to replace their non-copper water service <br /> pipes, Elk River Municipal Utilities will replace those water service pipes from the main <br /> to the curb stop at no expense to the property owner. We suggest the property owner <br /> complete the service replacement from the curb stop to their water meter at their expense. <br /> Elk River Municipal Utilities staff people will be contacting you to schedule a visit to <br /> inspect the piping before your water meter to verify if it is of copper or non-copper <br /> material.
