To Item Number Mayor and City Council 4.10 Agenda Section Meeting Date Prepared by Consent August 19, 2013 Michael Hecker, Parks and Recreation Director Item Description Reviewed by Resolution Acknowledging Contribution from Cal Portner, City Administrator Resident Charles Larson for a Park Bench Reviewed by Action Requested Adopt by resolution the acceptance of a $700 monetary donation from Charles Larson for the purpose of a park bench to be installed at the city line end of the Great Northern Trail. This is pursuant to Minnesota State Statute X465.03. Statute requires that resolutions are adopted by a 2/3 majority vote. Background/Discussion The need for a park bench at the city line end of the Great Northern Trail has been discussed. Residents have contacted staff about the need for a bench at the city/township line (4 3/4 mile marker). Some residents stop to turnaround and rest at this point of the trail. Charles Larson heard about this need and approached Parks and Recreation Director Michael Hecker about donating a bench at the end of the trail. He stated that he wanted to assist some of his friends who use the trail on a daily basis. The Parks and Recreation did discuss this donation at the August 14 meeting including the location of the bench at the end of the trail. The consensus was in support of the bench and its location. Financial Impact City is receiving a $700 cash donation towards the purchase of a park bench. This donation should fund most of the cost for the bench with any difference including the cost of installation to be paid for by the city. Staff and the Parks Commission recently discussed the need for a policy for donations and memorials including future maintenance and disposition of donations such as a bench.
