HOUSING CHARACTERISTICS <br /> Age of Housing Stock <br /> The following graph shows the age distribution of the housing stock in 2000 based on data from <br /> the U.S. Census Bureau and 2010 from the American Community Survey (5-Year). Table HC-2 <br /> includes the number of housing units built in Elk River, prior to 1940 and during each decade <br /> since. The following are key points derived from Table HC-2. <br /> • In total, Elk River is estimated to have nearly 8,000 housing units, of which roughly 6,650 <br /> are owner-occupied and just over 1,300 are renter-occupied. In total, owner-occupied <br /> housing units account for about 83.5% of Elk River's total housing stock. <br /> • The highest number of homes was built during the period from 2000 to 2004. Overall, <br /> roughly 31% of housing units were built during this period. Less than 15% of Elk River <br /> housing stock was built before 1970.
