LAW ENFORCEMENT EXPERIENCE <br /> <br />I have a fairly diverse work experience. I spent seven years in a National Guard <br />Military Police Company. My experiences here including training, leadership, crowd <br />control, emergency management and planning. I took part in annual weapons training, <br />patrol work and worked as a station sergeant during field exercises. I also participated <br />in work during events at the State Capitol as well as other civic functions throughout <br />the year. <br /> <br />From 1980 to 1985 I worked for the Elk River Police Department as a police officer, <br />police corporal and police sergeant. My additional duties included reserve training, <br />firearms training and acting as second in command of the police department. <br /> <br />I spent two fifteen day periods working for the State Fair Public Safety Department <br />during the Minnesota State Fair. I was assigned general patrol duties as well as <br />specific crowd control details. <br /> <br />Since 1985 I have been employed by the Anoka Police Department. I started as a <br />patrol officer but moved into the criminal investigation unit where I served until I was <br />promoted to Sergeant in 1989. As an investigator, I was assigned a variety of cases <br />which were handled from the point of initial investigation through either an arrest or a <br />formal complaint with the City or County Attorney. I had occasion to work on several <br />large and complex cases which were not only very rewarding, but also great learning <br />experiences. <br /> <br />My experiences and assignments as a patrol sergeant have been very challenging. <br />In Anoka, the step to my current position of Senior Master Sergeant is a five step <br />process. Each step requires certain management training or specialty skills before you <br />may advance. The process takes five years with final promotion taking place at the <br />end of the fifth year. <br /> <br />Anoka sergeants are required to supervise a team of six officers as well as any office <br />staff and non-sworn personnel working during that shift. This may include two police <br />technicians, a community service officer and a state hospital police security officer. <br /> <br />Other duties include review of all accident reports, traffic tickets, criminal citations, <br />reports, repair tags and daily logs. Sergeants also prepare daily roll calls, distribute <br />information and assign tasks as needed. We also respond to calls for service as <br />needed during the normal shift. <br /> <br />Each sergeant is also responSible for budget preparation in areas of special <br />assignment. I am responsible as the senior patrol sergeant for yearly patrol equipment <br />needs, police gun range, mountain bike unit and honor guard budgets. All sergeants <br />are responsible for yearly goal development as well as other projects as assigned. I am <br />currently assigned to the countywide computer group which is developing the request <br />for bids for a county wide networked system. <br /> <br />Sergeants are also responsible for conducting initial investigations on complaints <br />against officers. They also investigate officer involved accidents, prepare first report <br />of injury forms, review all use of force incidents as well as police pursuits to insure <br />they are within policy guidelines. They prepare evaluations as well as disciplinary <br />statements and make recommendations to the Chief on corrective measures. <br />Supervision of the field training program and field trainee along with career <br />development are included in daily tasks. <br /> <br /> <br />
