Information
MEMORANDUM
TO: City Council
FROM: Tina Allard, City Clerk
DATE: April 18, 201 I
SUBJECT: City Newsletter
Awhile back Mayor Dietz attended a conference and learned that other cities were making a
profit from their community newsletter. Staff was directed to look at the issue and this
update is being provided.
I contacted Mayor Dietz to find out which cities are making a profit in order to learn more
information. Mayor Dietz mentioned the City of Ramsey and asked me to contact the
League of Minnesota Cities (LMC) regarding the other cities. I tried making contact with
Ramsey and the LMC Training and Conferences Manager. I didn't receive a response from
either group.
After doing some further research, I located the attached document regarding the City of
Ramsey and their newsletter.
It should be noted that it is more difficult to get ads in the Elk River newsletter because we
don't have the demographics to support it as much as a city like Maple Grove. It is easier fox
Maple Grove because they have many more businesses that axe in the area and willing to
advertise. Our current vendor hasn't been filling all the ad space fox Elk River and has
donated some ads.
There has been a lot of discussion with the Visioning Team and some discussion with the
Branding Subcommittee with regards to overall marketing/communications of the city. Staff
would like to continue to review this item but to wait and see how it will fit into the
decisions that are made with both the visioning and branding projects.
N:APublic Bodies\City Council\Council RCA\Communicadon~ANewslcttcr PmflLdoc
