IV. HANDICAP PARKING SIGNS
Sign Recommendation:
- Sign post: 4"x4" Trex® composite lumber post with Elk River logo carved/sandblasted into post
- Standard handicap metal sign
- Set sign back from parking lot edge far enough for mower to pass between curb and sign
- Option: metal sign with Elk River logo screwed into post
Other Recommendations:
- The mowed strip along the edge of the parking lot is not needed. In our experience, mowed strips
along native prairie plantings become vectors for non-native invasive weed establishment that
will eventually degrade the native planting.
V. WAYFINDING SIGNS
Way-finding signs are currently located throughout Woodland Trails Park and give walkers, joggers,
skiers, and bikers a system of knowing where they are. Timber posts are labeled with a letter that is
keyed to paper laminated maps. The primary maintenance concern is that the summer and winter maps
must be rotated twice per year.
The new way-finding sign system will be low maintenance, have a fresh look, and maintain a rustic
character consistent with the naturalistic park aesthetic. Trail distances should show mileage as well as
kilometers.
We recommend replacing the natural timber post with a maintenance free composite timber post in a dark
brown color. The Elk River logo can be added to the post as a metal plate or sandblasted into the posts.
The signs will have a lazge letter (i.e. "A") to indicate location on the map. Summer/Winter maps will be
printed on opposite sides of the same panel for easy transition between seasons.
VI. TRAIL LOOP NAME SIGN
The existing trail loop name signs are placed in front of the plant community areas (prairie, poplar woods,
etc.), and do not give a directional orientation for the signs.
Our recommendation is to re-use existing trail name signs but move them to intersections so that direction
and location of trail is clear. Indicate direction by cutting an "arrow" on end of sign. Mount on single
rather than double posts. Existing posts replaced by composite lumber (Trex or similar) posts that are
maintenance free and do not rot or decompose. Create 2 new signs for North and South Crossings.
VII.
