ELK RIVER SIGNAGE MASTER PLAN
Preliminary Recommendations
Prepared by: The Kestrel Design Group
Prepared for: City of Elk River
Updated: October 12, 2005
I. ENTRY SIGN
Sustainable Ucsi~t
Aquatic & Terrestrial Resonation
Etologieal Stornrwalcr Mmra~,remenl
Natural Areav M.m:~cmcnt
Soil Bioeugiuccrinq
Landscape Architecture
The entry sign has been designed by Vacker Signs. The concept shows timbers pots and a sandblasted
wood panel with multiple paint colors. The sign should be placed so it is visible from Elk Lake Road.
II. ENTRY KIOSK
There are several potential locations for the entry kiosk near the parking lot (see attached plan).
1. In open grassy area -this location is the most accessible and visible location to place the
entry kiosk.
2. Edge of prairie -this location seeks to blend the kiosk into the landscape. It is very near the
parking lot, making it easily accessed. It is perhaps too close though, as it might be an easier
target for vandals.
3. Edge of the woodland -this location places the kiosk at the edge of the woodland, in the
prairie. Visitors would have to walk a short distance through the prairie, immersing them in a
plant community, to reach the kiosk. This is the recommended location.
The entry kiosk will provide space for signage, seating, some overhead shelter, and ski racks. See Sign
Template for more information.
III. VOLUNTEER THANK-YOU SIGN
Instead of thanking volunteers on a sign along, we proposed that a "Volunteer Prairie Garden" be
designed as a living tribute to the many volunteers who have made and continue to make Woodland Trails
the beautiful park that it is. This could be a small (-250 square feet) planting of native prairie
wildflowers that is located near the entry kiosk and includes seating for people to enjoy. The composition
would have more flowers than the existing prairie, creating ayear-round colorful garden. It would be a
natural place for people [o relax or congregate before or after their time spent in the park. Since the
prairie is already maintained with controlled burns, it would not add any significant costs or time to the
cuaent maintenance program. Along with the garden, their could be paver bricks inscribed with the
names of donors/volunteers, and a small sign which displays volunteers names.
'fHF.
