ShattuckSt. Mary's School
Second Ice Sheet
Faribault, Minnesota
.._~
h k '
Size: 29,600 SF - $3.5 million
Shattuck St Mary's School (SSMS) is a grade 6-12 private college-prep
school located in Faribault, Minnesota.
SSMS had long been known nationally for its boys' hockey programs.
To accommodate for a growing number of players they commissioned
the design of additional locker rooms connected to the existing arena
for the older boys'teams. The original arena's refrigeration system was
replaced at the same time.Thearena also received new dasher boards,
a new lighting system, and a new dehumidification system, making
the numerous summer hockey programs more comfortable and dry.
SSMS made a decision to add girls' hockey and figure skating to SSMS
programming. These two skating programs were so popular, ice time
demand on the original arena could no longer be accommodated
without scheduling daytime classes around hockey practice. The
situation prompted the school to commission the design of a new
indoor ice arena, the first new building on Campus since the late
1960's. The arena has 750 permanent seats, one NHL sized (85'x 200')
sheet of ice, complete with public toilets, 6 hockey team locker rooms,
a referees locker room, and a small concession/lobby. The arena
opened in September of 2005. SSMS Boys and Girls Prep teams won
their respective National Titles the next two consecutive years.
* Architect Chuck Freiberg was SSMS Architect of Record for over ten
years (1998 thru 2008) while in prior association.
ht\g~rchitects.com
architects ~ •
