r~
LJ
•
•
23 November 2010 architect s
Rich Czech
Arena Manager
City of Elk River
1000 School Street NW
Elk River, MN 55330
RE: Elk River Ice Arena Complex Renovations
Concept Design/Programming Proposal
Replacement of original metal building and remodeling to 1997 Addition
Dear Rich:
• Site Plan with notes
• Demolition Plan with notes
• Floor Plans with notes
• Building elevations with notes
• Typical building sections with notes
• Artist perspective sketch
• A short construction narrative to aid in budgeting.
I enjoyed the opportunity we had yesterday discussing options for renovating the existing Elk River Arena Complex.
It's amazing that it's been over 13 years now since we opened the Olympic Rink addition. I remember City
Administrator Pat Klaers saying, "Someday they will need to replace the old rink but it won't be on my watch."
The. question now is how and what will it cost?
During our meeting yesterday, I mentioned a design process called Concept Design/Programming. Concept Design
starts with a programming meeting between HTG Architects and your selected Arena Design Cotnmittee.:In that.
meeting we will begin to discus the overall expectations of creating a new Ells River Arena Complex. It's like
gathering all the wish lists. similar to the one you shared with me. The job of the architect is to listen, ask questions,
add comments, and sometimes provide quick sketches to assist in coming up with a Program Statement that
everyone can agree to. With an approved program statement in hand the Architect can begin to generate a number of
program driven free hand sketches of floor plans that- show how design can be use4d to resolve items on the
Program Statement. Subsequent meetings with the Design Committee over design options will ead to a consensus
on a plan that. all parties have contributed to and approved.
With an approved Program and Plan the Architect can complete the Concept Plan Drawings, I left you an example
of the approved Cottage Grove* Concept Plans fof the addition of a second sheet of ice. ConceptPlans are still in a
"to scale" hand sketched format but with sufficient information added to them that an arena savvy General
Contractor can'secure a budget construction number. Concept. Sketches are not intended to be seen as completed
construction documents. The Concept Plans will include the following:
* Completed by C Freiberg while under separate employ
During our Monday meeting we discussed three possible options for the replacement of the old rink
1. Remove and replace the existing metal building with a new arena in the same location and provide major
remodeUaddition to the existing lobby
2. Design a new arena in the parking lot east of the Olympic rink making the Olympic rink's east wall a
common wall and tie the two together with new lobby. Tear down old arena when completed.
3. Remove existing metal building replacing it with a new arena running perpendicular to the Olympic arena
and then create new lobby to the west of existing lobby.
HTG ARCHITECTS 9300 Hennepin Town Road Minneapolis MN 55347 (952) 27$-$$$0 htg-
architects.com
MINNEAPOLIS PHOENIX
TAMPA
