Elk River Library Board Minutes: January 25, 2000 Page Two
Preservation Alliance is in the process of organizing a local voluntary board;
will have an educational display at the library in May 2000 related to endangered
properties in Sherburne County. Also, educational program on restoring native
prairie plants is scheduled for May 11, 2000.
Materials have been purchased to make signs for the library's interior to direct
people to the Adult Section, Children's Section, and the fnternet Stations. A city
employee will make the signs in the near future; maintenance staff wilt hang the
signs from the ceiling over the designated areas. Board asked the librarians to
choose a suitable typeface and border for the signs, ensuring that typeface was
consistent on alt signs.
Jones asked for update on storytelling programs. Stoffers reported that two
storytellers continue to present age-appropriate storytimes for children ages 18-36
months and ages 3-5 years. The storytellers submit a lesson plan for the librarian's
approval ahead of each session. The library's budget covers supplies needed for
each session, such as craft supplies. The Elk River Star News publishes the storytime
schedule inkind.
New Business: The clock at the front desk is in need of repair. A motion to
contact a clock repairer, get a bid for repair costs, and repair the clock if the
librarian deems the costs reasonable was made by Graham and seconded by
Anderson. Approved unanimously.
A new mat is needed for the back door area. Librarian will select a suitable
mat; cost covered in the 2000 budget.
Oleksowicz reported that GRRL has installed a new library catalog online,
called PAC for Windows, at one station in our library. The old catalog continues to
operate as welt, until all stations are eventually converted to the new system. Board
asked him to explain how costs were covered for this. GRRL's funding comes from
local property tax (75%), state and federal funds (20%) and miscellaneous revenue,
such as from fines, interest, etc. (5%). The local portion of funding is calculated
from a complex formula that factors in a county's net tax capacity, its total
population and the number of registered library borrows. GRRL serves a six county
area in Central Minnesota.
Board meetings during 2000 will be held the fourth Tuesday of each month.
Motion to adjourn made by Anderson, seconded by Graham. Approved
unanimously. Meeting adjourned at 7:25pm.
Respectfully submitted,
Geraldine Graham
