Page 1/2 <br />UnitedHealth Group: NTC1 Building Expansion <br />Project Narrative <br />City of Elk River -Site Plan Review <br />UnitedHealth Group: Next Technology Center 1 Building Expansion <br />Project Narrative <br />August 30, 2010 <br />The applicant is herby submitting the required documents and respectfully requests approval of the Site Plan by the <br />City of Elk River. <br />Applicant UnitedHealth Group (UHG) is a diversified health and well-being company dedicated to <br />Background and making the health care system work better. UHG, headquartered in Minnesota, operates in <br />Reason for all 50 states and internationally. UHG's common stock is traded on the New York Stock <br />Expansion Exchange under the symbol UNH. <br />Continued growth of UHG businesses has resulted in the need for additional data processing <br />capacity at their Elk River data center, known as Next Technology Center 1 (NTCI). The <br />existing data center was completed in 2008 and was master planned for future expansion by <br />adding two raised floor "modules" to house additional computer gear. With the addition of <br />these modules the facility will be at its ultimate master planned design capacity. <br />Proposed The purpose of this expansion project is to create an additional 50,766 square feet to house <br />Expansion Scope additional computer systems that are critical in handling the vast quantity of digital <br />information that UHG processes in support of business operations. With the proposed <br />expansion, the total facility area will be 234,131 square feet. Along with adding building <br />area, the expansion will add (2) new diesel fired back-up generators, and (2) chillers and <br />evaporative cooling towers to match the existing equipment in place. The quantity of diesel <br />fuel storage and chilled water storage (TES tank) will not change. Since this expansion will <br />not warrant any additional staff, there will be no modifications to any existing employee <br />work or meeting spaces. <br />Compatibility with The proposed expansion will not change the functional use of the existing facility, it will <br />surrounding only add additional space and capacity. The applicant UHG, Target Corporation and <br />properties Sherburne County have an existing Declaration Agreement that requires each party to <br />obtain the approval of the other parties for any improvements made by the other. Sherburne <br />County has granted their approval for UHG's expansion plans as described in this submittal. <br />UHG is pursuing Target's approval, and expects it imminently. <br />Development At present, the expansion of the NTC1 facility is scheduled to begin construction after <br />Schedule applicable building permits are obtained in October 2010, and be completed by December <br /> 1, 2011. <br />Hours of With this expansion, the NTC1 facility hours of operations will not change from what it has <br />Qperation been for the past 2 years.
