Page 1/2 UnitedHealth Group: NTC1 Building Expansion Project Narrative City of Elk River -Site Plan Review UnitedHealth Group: Next Technology Center 1 Building Expansion Project Narrative August 30, 2010 The applicant is herby submitting the required documents and respectfully requests approval of the Site Plan by the City of Elk River. Applicant UnitedHealth Group (UHG) is a diversified health and well-being company dedicated to Background and making the health care system work better. UHG, headquartered in Minnesota, operates in Reason for all 50 states and internationally. UHG's common stock is traded on the New York Stock Expansion Exchange under the symbol UNH. Continued growth of UHG businesses has resulted in the need for additional data processing capacity at their Elk River data center, known as Next Technology Center 1 (NTCI). The existing data center was completed in 2008 and was master planned for future expansion by adding two raised floor "modules" to house additional computer gear. With the addition of these modules the facility will be at its ultimate master planned design capacity. Proposed The purpose of this expansion project is to create an additional 50,766 square feet to house Expansion Scope additional computer systems that are critical in handling the vast quantity of digital information that UHG processes in support of business operations. With the proposed expansion, the total facility area will be 234,131 square feet. Along with adding building area, the expansion will add (2) new diesel fired back-up generators, and (2) chillers and evaporative cooling towers to match the existing equipment in place. The quantity of diesel fuel storage and chilled water storage (TES tank) will not change. Since this expansion will not warrant any additional staff, there will be no modifications to any existing employee work or meeting spaces. Sherburne County has granted their approval for UHG's expansion plans as described in this submittal. UHG is pursuing Target's approval, and expects it imminently.
