News letter of the Elk River Area Arts Council Edition Number 15 <br />ERAA C <br />ELECT IONS <br />The recent elections for members <br />of the Arts Council Board of <br />Directors saw the return of an <br />incumbent member and the <br />election of two new Board <br />members. Lisa Houlton was <br />appointed to the Board last spring <br />to fill a vacancy and was elected <br />to a three year term in the recent <br />lection. Also elected to the <br />and were Nancy Gongoll and <br />oug Stillwell, both of Elk River. <br />Lisa is a singer. She appeared <br />last summer with Perry Stanley in <br />our Arts in the Park Concert <br />Series. When not busy on Arts <br />Council activities, she spends her <br />spare time ( ? ? ?) raising three <br />small children. <br />Nancy Gongoll is an oil painter <br />who studies with Harvey <br />Schroeder in Elk River. She has <br />been involved in community <br />activities for several years. <br />Currently she is a member of the <br />Elk River Citizens League. The <br />League is undertaking a study of <br />the arts this year. <br />Doug Stillwell in known to many <br />who grew up in Elk River. He is a <br />retired Junior High School <br />Counsellor and is now active as a <br />r ootographer and oil painter. <br />ur of his photographs were <br />selected to be used in the <br />calendar that was published by <br />the Arts Council <br />Thanks to those who ran for the <br />Board of Directors and <br />congratulations to the three who <br />were elected. We know they will <br />bring outstanding ideas to the <br />Arts Council. <br />Elections were held by ballots that <br />were mailed to all paid members <br />during the month of October. If <br />you receive the Newsletter but did <br />not receive a ballot, your dues <br />may not be up to date. Call the <br />Arts Council Office if you have <br />any questions. <br />Strings for Youth <br />News <br />The Fall 1995 Strings for Youth <br />session has brought in many <br />newcomers. The list of beginners <br />includes seven violin, two viola <br />and two cello players. The newly <br />organized Chamber String <br />Orchestra consists of four violin <br />players and one viola player. <br />RECITAL <br />The recital for the Fall session will <br />be held on Monday, January 29th. <br />at the Union Congregational <br />Church in Elk River starting at <br />7:00 pm. The Church is located <br />at 1118 4th. Street N.W. The <br />recital will consist of solos and <br />duets. <br />This recital will also feature the <br />"Premier Performance" of the <br />Chamber String Orchestra. The <br />December, 1995 - January, 1996 <br />recital is free and open to the <br />public. Attendance at this recital <br />will also be an excellent <br />opportunity to find out more <br />about the Strings for Youth <br />program. <br />SECOND SESSION <br />The second session of Strings for <br />Youth and the Chamber Strings <br />begins the week of February 5, <br />1996. These programs are open <br />to children ages 6 - 17. Small <br />group lessons are held weekly on <br />Monday or Tuesday evenings. <br />The perfect time for most children <br />to start learning to play a string <br />instrument is when they are in the <br />third or fourth grades. The <br />instruments taught are violin, <br />viola, and cello. <br />The Chamber String Orchestra <br />rehearses on Tuesday evenings <br />from 7:00 pm. to 8:00 pm. It is <br />open to children with advanced <br />note - reading skills and general <br />knowledge of music and reading <br />key- signatures. Auditions for the <br />orchestra will be held in late <br />January before the start of the <br />new session. <br />If you are interested in <br />participating in the Winter /Spring <br />session of lessons or in the <br />orchestra, please contact Strings <br />for Youth Director Rhonda <br />Johnson at the Arts Council office <br />441 -4725 for registration <br />information. The deadline for <br />signing up is January 20, 1996. <br />
