1. Population Trends <br />The population growth in the City from 1980 through 1994 is reflected in the growth in <br />housing units. The number of single family units added to the housing stock increased by <br />1052 since 1987, while a total of 390 duplex, apartments and townhouses were added <br />during that same time period (Figure 2 -D). <br />2. Age /Gender <br />The 1990 age /gender pyramid (Figure 2 -E) for Elk River is typical of a growing community. <br />The identified age groups represent large number of people in the 5 -17 and 18 -20 age <br />groups. <br />It is anticipated that future residential expansion in the City will continue to attract young <br />families with children. This growth can be expected to place increased demands on the <br />school system and parks system, as well as other family oriented services and facilities. <br />Besides the younger families, an increasing number of middle and retirement aged <br />residents will be present. This age group represents the baby boomers from the 50's and <br />60's. <br />3. Occupational Profile of Residents <br />Of the 5,496 residents 16 years and older in the labor force, 1,699 (31%) were involved in <br />the service industry. The next largest employment sector was in manufacturing with 1,186 <br />(22 %) persons. This was followed by retail trade (864 people or 9 %). A summary of the <br />. industry employing Elk River residents 16 year and over is provided in Figure 2 -F. <br />There are six major occupational groupings which account for 65 percent of all <br />employment for City residents. The leading category of employment is administrative <br />support including clerical with 463 persons (15.6 percent). This is followed in order by <br />precision production, craft and repair (457 people or 15.4 percent), professional specialty <br />occupations (365 people or 12.3 percent), machine operators, assemblers, and <br />inspectors (344 people or 11.5 percent), and executive, administrative, and managerial <br />occupations (306 people or 10.3 percent). A summary of employed persons 16 years and <br />over by occupation is provided in Figure 2 -G. <br />U <br />For purposes of this report, it is assumed that the employment distribution has remained <br />similar to that of 1990, while the total number of people in the various employment <br />categories will be increased. <br />income <br />The City of Elk River has a per capita income of $14,616 in 1990, and a median household <br />income of $37,549. Figure 2 -H provides a comparison on income statistics for various <br />cities in the northwest sector of the metropolitan region. This comparison reveals that Elk <br />River ranks in the lower one - fourth of per capita income among the selection cities, while <br />the highest per capita income was $17,481 in Maple Grove. From the eleven cities <br />selected, the City ranked ninth in median household income ($37,549) while Maple <br />Grove had a mean household income of $50,611 and the average for the 11 cities was <br />$40,968. <br />/o <br />
