le
Elk River --
' Municipal Utilities
13069 Orono Parkway phone: 763.441.2020
Elk River, MN 55330 Fax 763 4418099
' September 6, 2005
To: Elk River Municipal Utilities Commission
' From: Bryan Adams
Subject: Purchase Digger Derrick Line Truck
The proposed 2006 budget contains a $180,000 item for trade-in on existing and purchase
t of a new Digger Derrick Line Truck. Staff is proposing to trade-in a 1996 GMC Digger
Derrick Truck. This is the last gasoline fueled heavy truck in our fleet. All of our other
trucks are diesel which are more efficient and require less maintenance. This 1996 GMC
is showing its age and should be replaced.
Staff is proposing to purchase a tandem style flatbed truck with some bins for storage.
This truck will have the largest lifting capacity derrick available for a tandem truck. With
our electric system growth, we have a number of 1000 KVA to 1500 KVA transformers
in our system that weigh 6 to 7 tons. Our existing equipment has great difficulty or can
' not safely handle these heavy loads. We often rely on a crane service to handle these
heavy transformers. In an outage situation where a 1500 KVA transformer fails, it is
desirable to be able to have the equipment necessary to handle this transformer. instead of
aiting for a crane service. This will allow us to get these customers back in service
quicker.
' We are currently solicitating bids for this truck. Bids will be presented at the October
2005 Commission meeting. If this commission awards this bid at the October meeting,
this equipment will be delivered in a July 2006 time frame.
•
1
