<br />e <br /> <br />SPECIAL MEETING OF THE ELK RIVER CITY COUNCIL <br />HELD AT THE ELK RIVER CITY HALL CONFERENCE ROOM <br />SATURDAY, JANUARY 28, 1989 <br /> <br />MEMBERS PRESENT: Mayor Tra11e, Counci1members Schuldt, Holmgren, <br />Dobe1 and Kropuenske <br /> <br />MEMBERS ABSENT: None <br /> <br />STAFF PRESENT: Patrick K1aers, City Administrator <br /> <br />Pursuant to due call and notice thereof, the special meeting of the Elk <br />River City Council was called to order at 9:00 a.m. by Mayor Tra11e. <br />The Mayor indicated that the purpose of this special City Council <br />meeting was to interview interested citizens for appointment to the one <br />vacant position on the Recreation Board and the one vacant position of <br />the Planning Commission. The following individuals were interviewed by <br />the City Council: <br /> <br />e <br /> <br />9:10 a.m. - Barb Northway (Recreation Board) <br />9:25 a.m. - Gary Olson (Recreation Board or Planning Commission) <br />9:40 a.m. - Jim Rossman (Planning Commission) <br />9:55 a.m. - Mary Eber1ey (Planning Commission) <br />CITY COUNCIL BREAK <br />10:30 a.m. - Robert Bischoff (Planning Commission) <br />10:45 a.m. - Theodore Franklin (Planning Commission) <br />11:00 a.m. - James Smerdon (Planning Commission) <br />11:15 a.m. - James Llewellyn (Planning Commission) <br />11:30 a.m. - Ted Cornelius (Planning Commission) <br /> <br />Following these interviews, the City Council had a general discussion on <br />the qualifications of the applicants and the needs of both commissions. <br /> <br />COUNCILMEMBER HOLMGREN MOVED TO APPOINr BARB NORTHWAY TO A THREE YEAR <br />TERM (EXPIRING 1/1/92) ON THE ELK RIVER RECREATION BOARD. COUNCILMEMBER <br />DOBEL SECONDED THE MOTION. THE MOTION CARRIED 5-0. <br /> <br />Regarding the Planning Commission vacancy, the City Council discussed <br />the problem of having so many qualified individuals and only one vacancy <br />for appointment. The Council discussed how to get these interested <br />citizens involved in other community activities. It was the consensus <br />that the non-successful candidates should be encouraged to contact the <br />Community Education Department to get involved in the 2001 Community <br />Project. The Council discussed its desire to have a representative on <br />the Planning Commission from Ward 2, if these individuals were as <br />qualified as the other applicants. It was the consensus of the City <br />Council that all three Ward 2 applicants; Jim Rossman, Jim Smerdon, and <br />Mary Eber1ey were good candidates for the Planning Commission, and that <br />all these individuals would most likely serve the community in a very <br />professional and objective manner. <br /> <br />e <br /> <br />COUNCILMEMBER DOBEL MOVED TO APPOINT MARY EBERLEY TO A THREE YEAR TERM <br />(EXPIRING 12/31/91) ON THE ELK RIVER PLANNING COMMISSION. COUNCILMEMBER <br />HOLMGREN SECONDED THE MOTION. THE MOTION. CARRIED 5'::'0. <br />
