Klaers, City/4.dministrator
July 12, 1999 ~

DATE:

SUBJECT: School District Contribution for Police
Overtime

As everyone knows, there was a great deal of concern about student safety at the
end of the school year. This concern was heightened due to the Littleton, Colorado
tragedy that took place in mid-April. In response to student safety concerns,
additional Elk River police services were provided in and around the area schools.

.

Attached for your information is the most recent Independent School District #728
"Current Events" newsletter. In this newsletter Dr. Flannery states his
appreciation and offers his praise to the Elk River Police Department for their
concern and services. Additionally, the ISD #728 Board approved payment of
$5,000 to the city in order to help offset the additional police overtime expenses that
were necessary, and which were not in the 1999 Police Department budget.

It is appropriate for the city to acknowledge this financial participation from the
school district for the extra police services, and to indicate our appreciation for these
additional funds. This contribution was not a city request. This expenditure was
something that obviously was not in the school district's budget either, so their
contribution is much appreciated as we all know how hard it is for any
governmental unit to part with funds for unbudgeted expenses.

.

13065 Orono Parkway · P.O.
