TO:

FROM:

DATE:

SUBJECT:

Item 5.6.

MEMORANDUM

Mayor and Council

Pat Klaers, City Administrator

March 22, 2004

Consider Building Maintenance Supervisor Wage Adjustment

On March 15, 2004 the City Council established pay grades for the building maintenance
supervisor and the assistant building maintenance supervisor positions. The building
maintenance supervisor was set at Pay Grade 9, the assistant building maintenance
supervisor was set at Pay Grade 8. (For your information, maintenance II positions are at
Pay Grade 9 and maintenance I positions are at Pay Grade 8.) After the employees are in
these positions for about one year we will ask them to complete a new time spent profile so
that an updated comparable worth analysis can be completed. In this regard, I would not be
surprised if these two positions ~vere ultimately moved higher up in our pay plan.

At the March 15, 2004 City Council meeting it ~vas briefly noted that it may be appropriate
to adjust the wage for Building Maintenance Supervisor Gary Lore now that he has been
assigned to bmldmg maintenance for over six months and now that we are in the process of
hiring an assistant building maintenance supervisor. During the last six months Gary has
remained at the maintenance I pay grade. Gary is at Step D of the maintenance ! pay plan
and is scheduled to go to the top in July. Gary is doing more complex work and more
responsible work than what is typical for a maintenance I employee. Since he is now in the
building maintenance supervisor role, it is appropriate that he receive a wage adjustment at
this time.

Recommendation
It is recommended that effective Sunday, March 21, 2004 Gary Lore be placed at Step D of
Pay Grade 9 and assuming Gary's work continues to be satisfactory, that he goes to the top
of Pay Grade 9 on July 1, 2004.

S: ~Council\Pat~ 2004Nbldgsupervisor2. doc
