~/
Elk REQUEST FOR ACTION
River
TO ITEM NUMBER
Ci Council 3.6.
AGENDA SECTION MEETING DATE PREPARED BY
Consent une 6, 2011 T. ohn Cunnin ham, Fire Chief
ITEM DESCRIPTION REVIEWED B~/
Authorization to Solicit Funds for Fire Prevention Activities
REVIEWED BY
ACTION REQUESTED
Approval for the fire department to proceed with soliciting funds for fire prevention material for 2011.
BACKGROUND/DISCUSSION
Annually, the Elk River Fire Department, with marketing and fundraising assistance provided by the
National Fire Safety Council, reaches out to local businesses to help support the department's fire
prevention activities. Through these efforts, the department is able to purchase educational material
(coloring books, literature, handouts, and posters). This material is later distributed to our local schools
and utilized in-house during the three month fire prevention educational efforts, led by Fire Prevention
Specialist Jeff Smith.
The fundraising effort is led by a representative of the National Fire Safety Council on behalf of the Elk
River Fire Department. The goal is to raise $10,000 that will be utilized to purchase educational material.
Letters will be sent to local businesses asking for their support in this effort. It has been a successful
program in past years that the fire department would like to continue, and hopefully, expand to include
material for our senior citizens. In addition to the mailings, information will be posted on the fire
department's webpage and Facebook accounts directing businesses on how they can contribute.
FINANCIAL IMPACT
The collaboration and marketing efforts of the Elk River Fire Department and the National Fire Safety
Council has enabled the Fire Department to provide educational material at little to no cost to the
department's annual operating budget.
ATTACHMENTS
• Fundraising letters
Action Motion by ~ Second by Vote
Follow Up
N:\PubGc Bodies\City Council\Council RCA\Agenda Packet\06-O1-2011\Fire Prevention.docx
