Item # 5.3.
of
fiver
MEMORANDUM
TO: Mayor and City Council
FROM: Lori Johnson, City Administrator
DATE: April 12, 2010
SUBJECT: Community Service Officer Position
Last Monday's Council agenda included an item to authorize staff to fill a Community
Service Officer (CSO) position vacated by a recent promotion. The Council requested
additional information prior to authorizing that this position be filled. Police Chief Jeff
Beahen will be present at the worksession to provide more information about the need for
this position.
As I stated at the last Council meeting, Chief Beahen, his staff, and I reviewed this position
carefully before recommending to the Council that the position be filled. There were various
considerations made during that review including the call volume that the CSO handles, the
services this position provides, how the duties would be distributed if this position is not
filled, and what services may need to be eliminated if the position is not filled.
'The 2010 budget currently includes $41,350 for this position. Looking forward to the 2011
budget, this is not a position that I would recommend be eliminated if revenues were not
sufficient to meet expenditures. You may recall that the Police Department has already lost
one non-sworn position as a result of the budget cuts.
Chief Beahen and I will be prepared to describe the duties of this position, the services
provided by the CSO, and to answer your questions about our recommendation to fill this
existing, budgeted position at Monday's meeting.
S:\Public Bodies\Council\Lori\2010\CSO 04 12 10.doc
