Elk River
Municipal Utiliries
Memorandum
To: Elk River Utilities Commission
Jobn Dietz
JertyGtunphtey
~~~
Prepared By: David Berg
Date: 2/26/2010
Subject: Hydrant Recall Labor Update
The hydrants that are in need of repair were going to be a project for our summer
help. After talking with other utilities and staff they mentioned the pros and cons
of the large task. I feel this project would be best suited for a contractor. There
will be no cost to the utilities as Waterous covers the repairs, and the contractor
would also have a warranty.
**From October 2009**
We were informed of a Waterous Hydrant part recall in September. Hydrants manufactured from
1999 to 2004 have recalled parts because of the grease within the equipment. ERMU has an
estimated 400 hydrants in the water system, which is about 40% of our hydrant inventory. We
have been in contact with Waterous and they are sending us new parts for 50 hydrants at this time
and more as we need them. Three hydrant part exchanges an hour is the likely time consumption
for labor. We will be refunded $40.00 per hydrant. If this does not meet our needs of time &
effort, Waterous has offered a contractor option. The contractor would complete the Labor and we
would not receive the $40.00 refund.
