Item: 7
fiver
MEMORANDUM
TO: Parks and Recreation Commission
FROM: Bill Maertz, Parks and Recreation Commission
DATE: January 13, 2010
SUBJECT: Directors Report
• Outdoor Skating Rinks -Parks maintenance staff are currently maintaining ice rinks
at nine locations. Handke Stadium and Lions Park have warming houses and hockey
rinks and lights. Country Crossings, I{liever Lake Fields, Mississippi Oaks,
Riverplace Park, Trott Brook Park, Highland West Park and Fresno Park have
unlighted general skating rinks.
• Special Events -Reductions in the programming budget will result in the
downscaling or elimination of some community events. Staff is currently reviewing
events and working to develop a special events schedule that provides the highest
level of service possible that fits within the budget.
• Holiday snow event -The heavy snows over the Christmas holiday resulted
maintenance staff working during their holiday. Staff went above and beyond to
insure that sidewalks, trails and rinks were cleared of snow and available for use the
weekend after the holiday. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the
maintenance crew for their commitment and hard work, and for sacrificing their time
off with family in order to provide service to the community.
• Solar Energy Legacy Grants- Staff is preparing applications for the Solar Energy
Legacy Grants. One project is for solar powered lights for the Great Northern Trail
tunnel that goes under CR33. The other project is for solar powered crosswalk lights
for the Great Northern Trail crossing at 221 S`. These lights are motion activated and
can alert both cars and pedestrians of potential crossing conflicts. (see attached)
