Item: 7
ver
MEMORANDUM
TO: Parks and Recreation Commission
FROM: Bill Maertz, Parks and Recreation Director
DATE: October 14, 2009
SUBJECT: Director's Report
• Movies in the Park -The movie series in River's Edge Commons concluded on
October 3`~. The weather cooperated and all five movies were shown. This event
attracted over 1200 people to downtown Elk River on Saturday nights over the last
five weeks.
• Ice Arena -The ice arena has installed coin operated controls for the heaters in the
Olympic rink. The arena is generally kept quite cool in an effort to keep energy costs
low. This results in quite a few complaints from parents and spectators. Now people
have the option to pay for heat. The cost is 20 minutes for a dollar. If all the parents
of a youth team chip in, the cost per person of extra heat during a game is minimal.
• Great Northern Trail- This winter the plan is to plow the new section of the Great
Northern Trail for winter walking. This two and a half mile stretch will provide
winter walkers another scenic option. It is hoped that this will help reduce the issues
with people walking on designated ski trails.
• Parks Maintenance- Crews are busy repairing and painting hockey boards at Lions
Park and Handke Arena.
