Burnsville Sanitary Landfill (Burnsville, MN) -aerial photo showing development adjacent to the <br />landfill. Development includes commercial and industrial businesses, including a Menards store (an old <br />Menards store was located at the entrance to the landfill, and they built a new store adjacent to the. <br />previous one, also adjacent to the landfill). Also included is a drawing of the City of Burnsville's vision <br />for the future Minnesota River Quadrant, of which the landfill is a central part, with the landfill's end use <br />being an 18-hole golf course. <br />2. Kestrel Hawk Landfill (Racine, WI) -aerial photo showing the proximity of development to the landfill. <br />Development includes residences, a shopping center, several forms of commercial and industrial <br />businesses and recreational uses,. such as ball fields. <br />3. Cuyahoga Landfill (Solon, OH) -example of where a $1.3 billion industry (Swagelok) located their <br />World Headquarters adjacent to a landfill for the purpose of utilizing the energy created at the landfill. <br />Included is a write-up on the location of Swagelok facility and other businesses in comparison to the <br />landfill, a picture of the Swagelok facility in proximity to the landfill (looking at the building from the <br />slope of the landfill), and an aerial photo showing the proximity of the landfill to residential and <br />commercial development. This landfill also sends excess gas to a Nestles Plant located in the vicinity. <br />4. Settlers Hill Landfill (Batavia, IL) - 2 pictures (1983 and 2005) showing development incroaching on the <br />landfill during the active life of the facility. Post-closure this facility will be a golf course (portions of <br />the course are shown in the 2005 picture). <br />5. Milam Landfill (Collinsville, IL) -aerial photo showing landfill and it's proximity to a NASCAR <br />raceway, which utilizes the landfill as overflow parking during events <br />6. CMS Landfill (Harrisburg, NC) - included a picture of a large landfill located next to several residential, <br />commercial and industrial businesses, including a NASCAR raceway. Also provided property values <br />over time of properties surrounding the landfill. <br />7. Butterworth-Landfill (Grand Rapids, MI) - 2 pictures illustrating the location of a major new Coca-Cola <br />bottling facility adjacent to the landfill. <br />8. Twin Bridges Landfill (Danville, IN) -aerial photo. showing proximity of landfill to development, which <br />includes a golf course, grocery store, DMV office, and other small retail/commercial businesses, such as <br />a video store. <br />9. Guadalupe Landfill (San Jose, CA) -aerial photo of a large landfill in CA where many industrial and <br />commercial businesses have developed during the life of the landfill. <br />11. Bethel Landfill (Virginia) -aerial photo of a landfill surrounded by a mix of residential, commercial and <br />industrial development. <br />ARTICLES <br />1. Article from Ford Motor Company on the development of Fairlane Green, a green retail and recreational <br />center located on a former landfill. Development will include 1 million square feet of retail development, <br />a 43-acre park, and 3.5 miles of trails, and be built in phases. The development will add approximately <br />2,000 jobs, and includes major national retail stores such as Target. Site was originally a quarry, and <br />converted to a landfill in the 1950s, and operated as such until recently, when the facility reached <br />capacity and was closed. <br />2. Excerpt from EarthCompliant.org web-site discussing carbon offset projects. Out of six of the notable <br />projects discussed, two are related to the use of landfill gas by industry. One is a landfill that provides <br />energy to a BMW manufacturing facility in SC, and the other is a landfill near Montreal that supplies gas <br />to power a nearby paper mill. <br />3. Notable item is <br />that the largest development in the area has occurred adjacent to the landfill, which consists of a race <br />track and casino, which has no complaints about the landfill. <br />
