Kiver
MEMORANDUM
TO: Parks and Recreation Commission
FROM: Bill Maertz, Parks and Recreation Director
DATE: June 10, 2009
SUBJECT: Director's Report
Great Northern Trail -Advertisements for bid will be published starting June 13,
2009. Bid opening is July 9, 2009. MNDOT will need some time to review the bids
and it is expected that the City Council would consider bid award at the first council
meeting in August. The engineers estimate for construction of this project is
$282,000. State and federal funding has been secured in the amount of $285,000.
Pet Waste in Parks -Commissioner Anderson requested staff prepare a plan to
reduce the amount of pet waste in city parks. Signage referencing city ordinance and
the associated fines has a limited effect. Staff has developed an informational flyer in
an effort to positively influence pet owners. As part of a marketing effort, flyer
distribution boxes have been installed in the busiest park locations. These boxes will
be regularly stocked with program flyers. The pet waste flyers will be made available
through these boxes, available at Lions Park and City Hall and downloadable on the
City Website.
Pinewood Golf Course is off to a good start this year. Revenue is up $15,000
compared to this time last year. Expenditures to date are $17,000 below last years.
The revenue increase is most likely attributed to the mild dry weather this spring.
The reduction in expenditures is due to two factors; staffing reductions and reduced
capital expenditures. The Pinewood Open is scheduled for June 18, 3:00 PM. As of
this date there are still slots available. Contact Pinewood for registration information.
Over 230 children are already signed up for youth golf programs this year at
Pinewood.
Attached:
Pet Waste Flyer
