City of
Elk -~-,
River
MEMORANDUM
T~: Mayor and City Council
~R~M: Bob Kluntz, Police Department
DATE: April 9, 2409
SUBJECT: Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant
Ea~:lief• in 2009 the ponce department was made awa~.•e of funds available through the Edward
Byrne Memo~•ial Justice Assistance Grant. X20,740 was allotted to the police depar~.xaent, so after
some discussion it was decided to apply fo~• these funds to offset the cost of a ma~.•ked squad car•
This will not be an .addition to the fleet; the funds will be used to replace funding which we expect
to be cut in 2010.
As a requirement of this grant request, the application must be made available fo~.• ~.•evieur by the
governing body of the City of Ells River not fewer than 30 days before the application is
submitted. Therefore, no action is requested, the only requirement is that the application is made
available for Council review.
Because of nonMsupplanting requirements and the fact that the window of opportunity to order a
2009 car has closed, the money has been requested for the purchase of a car in 2010. Due to
budget cuts a squad car was removed from the police departtxaent 209 budget,ln anticipation of
further cuts in 2010 the police department wishes to use this grant money to assist in the purchase
of a squad car; which we expect to be cut from next years budget, The current cost of a 2009 car
is X23,279, so with this funding a new car could be purchased at a cost of approximately X2,539 to
the City,
