Elk River
Municip al Utilitie s
13069 Orono Parkway
Elk River, MN 55330
June 5, 2007
To: Elk River Municipal Utilities Commission
Jerry Takle
Jerry Gumphrey
Jim Tralle
From: Bryan Adams
Subject: Review Equipment
phone: 763.441.2020
Fax: 763.44 t .8099
Attached is a list reflecting the vehicle and equipment we utilize. It takes a lot of equipment to
keep a municipal water and electric system functioning and keeping 35 employees productive.
The other issue is keeping this equipment in good working order yet not have obsolete
equipment. Our current vehicle replacement policy is to trade in vehicles (line truck & pick-up
trucks) at 10,000 hours of operation or 10 years. Our other construction equipment, cable plows,
tractor backhoe, front end loader etc. may be kept over 10 years because of intermittent use.
Our Unit #8 is a 1998 Freightliner with a Holan 42 aerial bucket, utilized on a daily basis by our
electric line crew. This unit is approaching 10 years old and due to be replaced. Although the
chassis is in fairly good shape, the aerial devise is showing its age and it is too short for the
current and future tasks it will be performing. Staff is recommending this unit be replaced.
Delivery for a new electric line truck is approximately 9 months. Estimated cost for a
replacement line truck is in the $130,000 range. We are currently securing bids for a
replacement line truck and a bid tabulation will be presented at our July commission meeting.
