Elk River -~
Municipal Utilities
13069 Orono Parkway
Elk River, MN 55330
June 6, 2007
To: Elk River Municipal Utilities Commission
Jerry Takle
Jerry Gumphrey
Jim Tralle
From: Bryan Adams
Subject: Security Camera's
W phone:763.441.2O2O
Fax: 763.441.8099
Previously this commission has discussed copper theft problems at our facilities. Staff was
directed to investigate cost of installing security cameras at our facilities. The cost of installing
seven cameras at our operations center is approximately $20,000 plus the cost of wire between
camera and monitoring area. Because this area is all asphalted, the cost of installing the wiring
will be in the $5,000 to $10,000 area.
If we installed an expandable security camera system to include not only the operations center
but other facilities like substations and water wells, the costs will escalate to $30,000 basic
system at operations center plus $3,000/remote site plus communication systems to link the
remote sites (radio, fiber optic, hardwire). The communication system could cost as much as the
basic system alone.
In conclusion, our theft to date has been a huge aggravation but the financial losses are not to the
extent to expend $30,000 or more to prevent theft. Abetter solution would be to install motion
sensors and security cameras that are not fully operational.
