ver
MEMORANDUM
TO: Parks and Recreation Commission
FROM: Michele Bergh, Recreation Manager
DATE: June 7, 2007
SUBJECT: Staff Report
Hot Topic( of the Month
The Summer Kickoff event was another big success with approximately 200 people in
attendance. We had cotton candy, popcorn, face painting, crazy hair, dunk tank, moon slide,
pitching machine, and karaoke. Chipolte's also donated 150 bags of chips and guacamole to
give out.
The Farmers Market begins June 7`h. We have 13 vendors currently selling vegetables, coffee
drinks, bottled water, smoothies, salsa, flowers, alpaca items, and soap. Additionally, the
Sherburne County Master Gardeners have an educational display and are there to answer
questions about gardening and more.
The 2"d annual bike rodeo will take place June 11`h. Last year we gave away over 80 helmets,
two bikes donated by WalMart and had over 150 children attend. We expect this year's
event will be as well attended as last year.
Safety Camp will be held on June 12`'' and 13`''. The State Trooper Helicopter, Sherburne
County Mounted Patrol, and the DNR are just a few of the topics that will be covered.
This is our first year for successfully running a sand volleyball league. We have 8 teams
playing at the Orono courts. We have improved these facilities to the benefit of both the
league and the general public by adding new nets, more sand, new boundary lines. We are
also putting up a 40 foot net between the volleyball courts and softball field to safety.
We had three summer staff members attend a training session offered by Minnesota Parks
and Recreation Association on June 2"d. This all day staff training offers a variety of games
and craft ideas, leadership training, and more. Our in house staff training is taking place on
June 9th
